Our carpincho Mimi

Hola,

Granja El Roble is a fully functioning farm and nature retreat. Currently on the farm we have a couple of carpinchos, a 7000 litre aquarium filed with two large pacu and many other varieties of local tropical fish, a howler monkey, a family of toucans, a couple of caiman in the lakes, and endless indigenous birds and animals constantly passing through.

El Roble has very comfortable accommodation and excellent traditional Paraguayan and German cuisine. Almost all ingredients are sourced from the farm. If you would prefer to source your own, there are excellent fishing opportunities nearby, and if you would like to strike out from the farm we provide some adventure activities.

My name is Peter Gardner and I have been living in Paraguay for the last twenty years. I have owned El Roble for the previous 13, and live here with my wife and our three children.

There is an internet connection on the farm, and a large collection of quality books, many available for exchange.

Trip Ideas

Paraguay to Bolivia: Many travellers wish to travel from Asuncion into Bolivia, and El Roble is the perfect stopping point on a journey travelling through Concepcion. One of our visitors wrote a guide to this journey, which we are happy to host here.

Rio Paraguay canoe trip: Recently I completed a 12-day raft trip down the Rio Paraguay, which was an extraordinary trip involving being immersed and isolated within one of the great wildernesses of South America. I offer to guide this trip for those who want unique adventure with unrivalled opportunity to see the wildlife of the Rio Paraguay.

While on my raft trip Globo TV, the largest TV company in Brazil, spotted us drifting down the river and added a brief moment of the trip on their documentary about the Rio Paraguay.

Bird Watching: Walking from the farm one can reach the Rio Ypane which is perfect bird watching country. This has many dense and secretive paths that can be explored, offering excellent opportunities to witness a true gallery forest. As well as many water birds there are also Howler and Capuchin monkeys.

We also take trips into the Chaco which is a 50 min drive away. Once there we travel onto private farms (estancias) and get right into the middle of one of the best and least explored bird areas in South America. As well as a huge variety of birds there will also be the chance to see caimen, snakes and giant anteaters. Staying at El Roble will offer you the opportunity to explore the Chaco and other areas of Paraguay and also strike out on your own to areas few other tourists will visit, giving the opportunity for a unique wildlife experience.

Thank you for your interest in El Roble. My family and I hope to see you soon for some unique South American adventures.

Yours sincerely,

Peter Gartner
